Tech Day in Nepal, October 31, 2007

On October 31, HumaniNet, ADRA Nepal, and Caritas hosted a "Tech Day" in Kathmandu, Nepal. The purpose of Tech Day was to familiarize managers and teams of participating humanitarian organizations with ICTs (information and communications technologies) that would be of value to relief and development programmes.

Attendees heard presentations and participated in demos of technologies that support humanitarian relief work.

In addition, the host partners led roundtable discussions on several important topics, including the use of GIS and digital mapping tools, information management in relief scenarios, and how to integrate technology into relief training.

Please see our Tech Day agenda.

Tech Day was the opening event in Exercise Khichadi, a week-long simulation exercise that was conducted by ADRA Asia and Caritas in Kathmandu on November 1-7. Tech Day was sponsored by Inmarsat and IDV Solutions and was attended by 90 representatives of NGOs from the South Asia region, local Nepalese nonprofit organizations, and government and UN agencies.

As part of Tech Day and Exercise Khichadi, demonstrations of geographic information systems (GIS) by IDV Solutions and ESRI were demonstrated and utilized by field teams. HumaniNet volunteers, led by Sue Gemmell, prepared a GIS field demo that is accessible by anyone with a Web browser. Please visit our Nepal GIS mapping page for more information and links.
