HumaniNet TeleCom
back to HumaniNet ICT Information Service
HumaniNet is dedicated to helping NGOs find the
most effective and inexpensive communications solutions. Our
current focus is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a technology
that routes voice calls over the internet. but we continue to
examine a broad range of technologies that may benefit disaster
response and humanitarian relief efforts.
Humanitarian teams are accustomed to checking email and viewing
Web sites on desktop or laptop computers, usually in an office
or hotel. Many now do it in the most remote areas - over a portable
satellite terminal. But some creative users have discovered how
to "call home" using their laptop and an RBGAN data
terminal.
Matt Blair has written a brief explanation of
VoIP. TechSoup also has a very good article entitled Ditch
your Telephone for VoIP.
By late February, we will have a report on our latest tests
of VoIP over the RBGAN satellite terminal.
